Colin Seeger
Colin Seeger B.Juris, LL.B
Colin Seeger has been actively involved in the music and media industry for over 20 years. He has been a partner in the boutique legal practice Simpsons Solicitors, located in Sydney, advising on licensing and commercialising intellectual property, litigation, venture structuring and management of intellectual property rights in businesses and organisations.
Prior to that he was Corporate Counsel and Legal & Business Affairs Manager for Polygram Australia, overseeing the acquisition and creation of recordings and films as well as managing the administration and enforcement of the company’s extensive catalogues of copyrights, trademarks and intellectual property. Prior to that, he was engaged by Chappell Music Publishing Limited, in London, to be part of a team developing a cutting-edge automated copyright administration system.
He was a member of the Australian Record Industry Association’s Copyright Committee for four years and sat on the Ethics Committee of The Law Society of New South Wales for four years.
He is co-author of the first edition of the widely respected book “Music Business” and was a lecturer at the University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts, teaching the post-graduate subject “Cultural Property, Ethics and the Law” – a cross-discipline subject combining commercial law. intellectual property and business administration.
In 1996, he created a new consultancy to help business ventures of all kinds to create and secure maximum benefit from their creative efforts. In parallel to this, he has provided commercial and industry advice to a wide range of companies, artists and media companies including television networks, children’s and life-style TV programmes, global sporting events (www.superfighter.tv) and assisting technology start-ups, to develop novel commercialisation strategies.
He was recently appointed to the Board of the Australian chapter of the Music Managers’ Forum and is a part time lecturer at Sydney TAFE, teaching commercial courses focusing on music licensing and related issues.
As a result of this work he has developed a global network of media contacts and associates in record companies, television and new media and provides business affairs consultancy services to a range of content providers and independent record labels and media companies.
